OTS - Orienteering Telemetry System

OTS HardwareThe OTS system is a rnage of wireless telemetry units that are designed for delivering packets of data in real time information back to a central point. The system itself is very generic and can support many different data sources and radio interfaces. However the standard implementation that is used frequently for gathering radio control data on running races has the following features:

1) RS-232 serial interfaces for collecting data
2) Compatible with both autosend control and autosend download formats from SportIdent
3) Compatible with online controls from EMIT
4) Flexible RF interface suitable for most FSM voice radios
5) Multiple hop network to increase range
6) Automatic messages routing
7) Full end-to-end packet acknowledgment for reliability
8) Inbuild Cyclic Redundancy Check enables error detection
9) Automatic re-request of delayed packets
10) 1Mbyte of message buffers
11) 2 x AA battery powered nodes
12) Fully waterproof construction
13) Compatible with all other Osprey and Merge hardware from GPProjects

OTS hardware is recommended for enabling radio controls that are within approximatley 1.5km of the receiving unit. This makes them particularily useful for commentary pre-warning controls prior to either Spectator or Penultimate controls. For longer distances and remote radio controls we recommend using the Osprey GSM radio control equipemnt.

Currently the following versions of the hardware are available:

  • OTS-Control1 (1 x RS-232 Data Interface, Radio Interface)
  • OTS-Control3 (3 x RS-232 Data Interfaces, Radio Interface)
  • OTS-Coordinator (Radio Interface, 1 x RS-232 Data Interface)
  • OTS-Coordinator (Radio Interface, 1 x USB Data Interface)

    A control enabled with OTS The OTS system is compatible with most commentary software packages, however primarily it is used with the OE/OSSpeaker software and the OCOMM software package from Michael Napier. OCOMM provides real time race information to a commentary team or for live web feeds, it also includes biography information to help the commentators.     OTS has been used to assist the commentary at the following events:

  • British Schools Orienteering Championships 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007
  • Harvesters Relay Event 2005, 2006, 2007
  • JOK Chasing Sprint 2004
  • JK Festival of Orienteering 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008
  • Scottish 6 Day Orienteering Festival 2005, 2007
  • Scottish Relay Championships 2007
  • World Cup Orienteering Festival 2005

    OTS has been used to provide safety race information at the following other events:

  • 3 Peaks Mountain Marathon 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008
  • Caledonian Challenge 2007
