Osprey - GSM Telemetry System

The Osprey radio control unit was developed to compliment the OTS and Merge hardware. It provides a solution to relaying data back from a remote radio control that is not within a few kilometers of the receiving unit. The Osprey unit utilises commercially available GSM networks and SMS packets to deliver the race data. With the low cost of SMS's a race can not retrieve race data from any location with minimal GSM coverage. Osprey remote unit

1) RS-232 serial interfaces for collecting data
2) Compatible with both autosend control and autosend download formats from SportIdent
3) Compatible with online controls from EMIT
4) GSM RF interface compatible with any 900MHz / 1800MHz mobile operator
5) Full end-to-end packet acknowledgment for reliability
6) Automatic re-request of delayed packets
7) 1Mbyte of flash message storage memory
8) LiIon rechargable battery pack, provides days of battery life
9) Fully waterproof construction
10) Compatible with all other OTS and Merge hardware from GPProjects

OTS hardware is recommended for enabling radio controls that are further than 1.5km of the receiving unit. This makes them particularily useful for remote radio controls. For spectator and penultimate control sites we recommend using the OTS radio control equipment.

The Osprey receiving hardware The Osprey equipment is compatible with most commentary software packages, however primarily it is used with the AutOdownload, OE/OSSpeaker software and OCOMM software packages. Information on how to interface software with the Osprey system is available on request.

Osprey has been used to assist the following events:

  • British Orienteering Championships 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010
  • JK Festival of Orienteering 2008, 2009, 2010
  • Scottish 6 Day Orienteering Festival 2007, 2009
  • Isle of Man, Manx Parish Walk 2007, 2008, 2009
  • Ten Tors Challenge 2008, 2009, 2010

The Osprey System Manual is available for download, and for information on to use the Osprey system to deliver results live to the web, please read the Osprey Online Integrators Guide.

Like all the Merge & OTS equipment, the Osprey system is available to rent or purchase.
